Every Big Shopping App Is Rated 4.7★+ — We Read the 1-Star Reviews. Here's What's Actually Breaking

Open the App Store and every major shopping app looks flawless: Amazon 4.83★, Walmart 4.82★, Etsy 4.93★, Target 4.9★. Across the twelve biggest, the average is ~4.7★ on 56 million+ ratings.

So we ignored the stars and read the complaints instead — 2,187 negative reviews across those twelve apps — and ran them through Snipinion to cluster them into themes. The result: the problems are strikingly consistent from app to app, and almost none of them are about the products. They're about the app itself and the operations behind it — exactly the stuff a 4.8★ rating hides.

Methodology. We collected recent reviews for 12 top US shopping apps via Apple's public App Store reviews feed (June 2026) and analyzed 2,187 negative reviews (1–2★) with Snipinion's complaint-clustering pipeline. Combined: ~56M total ratings, average ~4.7★. Per-app themes cover the 11 apps with enough negative reviews to cluster. Percentages are shares of each app's clustered negative reviews. This analyzes public review text — it isn't a quality ranking.

The headline: the #1 complaint is the app, not the merchandise

You'd expect shopping complaints to be about products — sizing, quality, "not as described." Some are. But the most common complaint theme across the basket is the app breaking — crashes, freezes, broken checkout, sign-in failures, sluggish search. It was a top cluster in 7 of the 11 apps we analyzed.

For companies spending fortunes on inventory and ads, the lesson is uncomfortable: you can lose the sale at the "Add to cart" button.

Number of shopping apps where each category was a top complaint theme — app bugs & performance lead

The patterns that repeat across (almost) every app

After app bugs, the same operational themes recur regardless of brand:

  1. Delivery & missing orders — late, lost, or "delivered" but never arrived (Amazon 39%, Walmart, SHEIN, Mercari, DHgate)
  2. Poor customer support — can't reach a human, tickets ignored (Poshmark, Mercari, Walmart, DHgate)
  3. Refunds & returns — money stuck, returns rejected (Wish 67%, DHgate, SHEIN)
  4. Wrong / low-quality items — received the wrong thing, or not as pictured (SHEIN, DHgate, Etsy's "inauthentic listings")
  5. Fees & payouts — the defining gripe on marketplaces (eBay 57%, Mercari 31%)

Notice what's missing: hardly anyone complains about selection or price. The damage is in fulfillment and support — the parts of the business that don't show up in a product rating at all.

The "free stuff" problem (Temu & SHEIN)

One pattern stood out on the discount marketplaces: complaints about misleading "free" offers and invite-a-friend games. On Temu, 53% of negative reviews clustered around free-gift/credit offers that didn't pay out as expected; SHEIN had a similar cluster around its mini-game ads. Whatever the marketing intent, a big share of these apps' loudest detractors are reacting to the promotions, not the products. (We're describing what the reviews say, neutrally — not making a claim about the companies.)

The rating really does hide it

This is the part every brand should sit with. These are 4.7–4.9★ apps — and yet:

A star rating averages the happy majority and the furious minority into one number that tells you nothing actionable. The complaint themes underneath are the real to-do list — and on a big app, a "small" 20% cluster is still thousands of customers with the same fixable problem.

What this means if you sell anything online

You don't need 56M ratings for this to apply — the pattern holds for any store, brand, or app:
